In the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) exhibition, students are often required to select and present three objects that represent their exploration of knowledge issues and the application of TOK concepts from the TOK prompts given in the TOK guide. Each object should be accompanied by a written commentary that reflects on the significance of the object in relation to knowledge questions and the TOK course.
Objects choice:
You must choose objects that are meaningful and you are connected with. These can be connected to specific knowledge questions or topics that you have seen through your TOK classes. These objects could be tangible stuff, images, artifacts and even digital content. I recommend you to choose 3 varied objects that are unique and there is so much to explore about with respect to knowledge, perspectives and the TOK concepts. Through these 3 objects one can holistically explore the TOK themes.
Introduction:
Even though an introduction is not obligatory, I would suggest if you could start the commentary with the purpose of the exhibition along with an introduction of the 3 chosen objects. Then, give a detailed description of each object as to why you chose that object and how it related to the prompt and the TOK Concept. Why is the object significant- give the context.
Apply the TOK concepts:
Identify clearly the knowledge issues in each object and discuss how these relate to the TOK chosen theme/s. Remember to connect it to your personal experiences or the world around you. There are 12 TOK concepts are certainty, culture, evidence, explanation, interpretation, justification, objectivity, perspective, power, responsibility, truth, and values. Apply these concepts to AOKs as well as the old syllabus WOKs implicitly. Few of my students took both knowledge claims and counterclaims to analyse each object. You need to demonstrate how your understanding of these concepts has evolved through your exploration.
For each object reflect on your personal engagement and how your perspective has changed now and what insights you have gained. Is there an impact of these objects now on your thinking about knowledge.
Explore fewer concepts in depth:
All the 3 objects need a clear connection like a narrative that flows smoothly from one to another. You show how they together contribute to the exploration of knowledge issues and your chosen TOK theme. Instead of taking so many concepts and explore superficially, I recommend focus on fewer concepts and a deeper exploration. Discuss implications, perspectives and assumptions for every object which keep you in the higher band marks.
Conclusion:
My students do give a conclusion by reflecting on how this process has contributed to their understanding of knowledge and the TOK course. Few of them summarise the insights gained through the exploration of the 3 objects even though I know there is a challenge of 950 word count in total.
